Dental Cleaning
Dental cleaning, also known as professional teeth cleaning or prophylaxis, is a routine procedure performed by a dentist or dental hygienist to remove plaque, tartar,
and stains from your teeth, helping maintain optimal oral health. Regular dental cleanings are crucial for preventing cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
How often should I visit the dentist for a check-up and cleaning?
For most patients, we recommend a routine check-up and cleaning every six months. Regular visits allows us to monitor your oral health, catch any potential issues like cavities or gum disease early, and provide professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar build-up. Depending on your individual oral health needs, we may recommend a different schedule.
Are dental X-rays necessary at every visit?
Not necessarily. Dental X-rays are an important diagnostic tool that helps us see what’s not visible during a regular exam, such as decay between teeth, issues with tooth roots, or bone loss. We will recommend X-rays based on your individual needs, risk factors, dental history, and the type of appointment. .
Are professional dental cleanings painful?
What should I do if I have a toothache?
If you’re experiencing a toothache, it’s important to contact us as soon as possible. Pain is a sign that something may be wrong. You can rinse your mouth with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed, but avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums. We will do our best to see you promptly to diagnose the cause and provide appropriate treatment.
Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums, and smile. While traditional dentistry is more about the health and function of the teeth, cosmetic dentistry is primarily concerned with enhancing aesthetic qualities.
Cosmetic dentistry can enhance not only a person’s smile but also their confidence
and overall self-esteem. However, the procedures may vary depending on individual
needs and the desired results. It is also important to note that these treatments may
be elective and may not be covered by insurance unless medically necessary.
Teeth Whitening:
This involves bleaching teeth to remove stains or discoloration, making them look brighter and whiter.
Veneers:
Thin, custom-made shells that are bonded to the front of the teeth to improve their appearance, covering imperfections like stains, chips, or misalignment.
Bonding:
A tooth-coloured resin is applied to repair decayed, chipped, or misshapen teeth. It’s a quick and less invasive option compared to crowns.
Crowns:
Caps placed over damaged or decayed teeth to restore their shape, size, and appearance.
Braces and Clear Aligners:
Braces or clear aligners (like Invisalign) are used to straighten misaligned or crooked teeth, improving both function and
aesthetics.
Gum Contouring:
If someone has a “gummy smile,” this procedure reshapes the gum line to expose more of the teeth and create a more balanced, attractive smile.
Smile Makeovers:
A combination of several cosmetic dental procedures to achieve the desired look and improve overall dental health.
Pediatric dentistry
Pediatric dentistry, also known as child dentistry, is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the oral health of children, from infancy through adolescence. Pediatric dentists are trained to handle the unique dental needs of children, including the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dental issues that arise during childhood.
Preventive Care:
Pediatric dentists emphasize preventive measures to ensure children develop healthy teeth and gums. This includes teaching proper brushing and flossing techniques, applying fluoride treatments to
prevent cavities, and monitoring the development of the child’s teeth.
Dental Exams and Cleanings:
Regular dental check-ups are essential to
ensure that children’s teeth and gums are developing properly. Pediatric dentists will clean children’s teeth, check for cavities, and assess any issues like misalignment, thumb-sucking, or early signs of gum disease.
Cavity Treatment:
If a child develops cavities, a pediatric dentist will treat them using fillings, crowns, or other dental procedures, just as an adult dentist would. However, the approach is often tailored to be more comfortable for children.
Orthodontics:
Some pediatric dentists also provide early orthodontic evaluations to identify potential alignment issues (like crooked or crowded teeth) and decide whether early treatment is necessary. This could involve braces or other corrective devices at the right time.
Teething Guidance:
Pediatric dentists offer advice on how to handle the discomfort of teething in infants, helping parents understand when the first teeth should appear and how to care for them.
Management of Dental Anxiety:
Many children experience anxiety or fear about visiting the dentist. Pediatric dentists are specially trained to use child-
friendly communication and techniques to make dental visits as stress-free and positive as possible. This can include creating a calming environment, using fun tools or dental hygiene games, and using techniques like “tell-show-
do” to reduce fear.
Treatment of Oral Habits:
Pediatric dentists also address oral habits like thumb-sucking or pacifier use, which can affect the development of teeth and
jaws if prolonged.
